Steven Velkei has served as lead trial counsel on matters totaling several billion dollars in potential exposure over the course of his nearly thirty year legal career. He concentrates on complex litigation matters and investigations, and has tried cases nationwide. Mr. Velkei gets great satisfaction out of taking difficult cases and succeeding where others have failed. Mr. Velkei also provides strategic risk assessment services to avoid litigation while advancing the client’s business goals.

Mr. Velkei started Velkei Law after successful stints with some of the country’s most prestigious major law firms. He has been recognized by California Super Lawyers, Super Lawyer, Benchmark Litigation and Law Dragon. He has also been quoted in a number of periodicals (including LA Business Journal, Daily Law Journal and Law360) and has lectured extensively on government investigations and enforcement actions, trial technique and diversity within the legal profession.

Diversity in the workplace is important to Mr. Velkei. He frequently lectures on diversity issues, and has been a regular presenter at the American Bar Association conferences, as well as made presentations before the Association of Corporate Counsel, the statewide conference of the California Association of Realtors, GOOD (“Guys Overcoming Obstacles to Diversity”) Guys, and others. For three years, Mr. Velkei acted as chair of the US Diversity and Inclusion Committee for the world’s largest law firm. He has also consulted with private companies on best practices for promoting diversity in the workplace, and has lectured on regulatory issues and trial advocacy. Mr. Velkei is himself from a diverse background. He is LGBTQ. His mother is Latina, his father is an immigrant from Hungary, and his husband is African American.

Mr. Velkei is involved with a number of major charitable groups in the Los Angeles area and is active politically. He serves on the Steering Committee of GOOD Guys, an advocacy group for greater equality for women in the workplace and associated with the National Conference of Women’s Bar Associations. He is the first man to serve in that capacity.

 

 

MATT KUGIZAKI

Matt Kugizaki has experience in all aspects of litigation. He represents companies, nonprofit entities, and individuals in disputes involving complex legal claims with an emphasis on breach of contract, professional malpractice, health care, and employment issues.

Throughout his legal career, Mr. Kugizaki has represented clients in high-stakes disputes involving difficult legal issues impacting his clients and, often, the community at large. Prior to starting Velkei Law, Mr. Kugizaki practiced law at various prestigious national law firms, including Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe and Loeb & Loeb.

Mr. Kugizaki is committed to pro bono representation and has provided hundreds of hours of service to various pro bono organizations. Among other things, Mr. Kugizaki has represented individuals seeking asylum and special immigrant juvenile status, as well as a class of individuals for issues related to telephone access in immigration detention. Mr. Kugizaki also served as a Lecturer in Law at UCLA where he co-taught “Introduction to the Lawyer-Client Relationship,” which focused on training law students to provide pro bono legal services in their community.

Mr. Kugizaki graduated from Boston University School of Law, where he received the Faculty Award for Academic Accomplishment and served as an Editor of Boston University Law Review. Mr. Kugizaki received his undergraduate and master’s degrees in Statistics from UCLA. At UCLA, he served as a teaching assistant and conducted empirical research in the field of epidemiology. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Mr. Kugizaki worked as a data analyst at a leading public policy opinion research firm.

Mr. Kugizaki has been recognized as a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers Magazine in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

 

 

CHRISTOPHER WILSON

Before beginning his legal career, Mr. Wilson spent several years working in the labs of major pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms, including Upjohn and Schering-Plough.  After graduating from The George Washington University School of Law, he joined the in-house legal group at eBay, Inc., where he worked closely with multiple software development teams in managing the company’s intellectual property.   There, he also worked with the legal group to negotiate and execute multiple patent licenses, and to manage the company’s patent litigation.  Afterward, Mr. Wilson joined Sidley Austin, and later, Wilson Sonsini as a patent litigator.  At both firms, he litigated multiple patent infringement actions, running the gamut of technologies, including pharmaceuticals (Hatch-Waxman litigation), spinal fusion devices, smart phone user interface design, and internet security software.

More recently, Mr. Wilson has focused his work on e-discovery related matters, leading and managing teams through a variety of actions.  These include hospital and health plan mergers, hospital bankruptcies, health plan anti-trust litigation, Medicare fraud/False Claims Act litigation, trade secrets misappropriation of DNA microarray technology,  rideshare app arbitrations, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act litigation in commodities and ForEx trading,  and many more.

Velkei Law is dedicated to creating a diverse environment where lawyers and staff feel empowered to be different, and encouraged to express their views for the good of our clients.  Countless studies have found that diverse environments generate greater productivity and better results for the clients those organizations serve.   Problem solving, at its core, requires looking at a problem from all angles, and having a diverse team ensures that a problem will be reviewed from a number of perspectives.  This is essential where, as here, Velkei Law manages complex disputes that are not subject to easy answers or solutions.  A flexible work environment is also essential to Velkei Law’s philosophy.  We believe that people are most productive when they can control their own space and ensure they are comfortable in it.  In that regard, the firm embraces a remote work policy that allows lawyers and staff the flexibility to work remotely and which uses the office as a creative space to gather and collaborate.  We still take time every week to get together, if only remotely, and do something fun together, whether it is solving a murder mystery, hearing from an expert on mindfulness (and managing stress) or just simply catching up over lunch.
